U.S. GMO labeling bill signed into law

President Obama has signed into law a bill that will require labeling of genetically modified ingredients. The legislation will require most food packages to carry a text label, a symbol or a code readable by smartphone that will let consumers know whether the food contains GMOs. The federal law pre-empts a Vermont state law that went into effect July 1. >> Read full article

U.S. study examines workforce gap in commercial bakery

The American Bakers Association and the American Society of Baking have released a report outlining the current and expected skills gap in the industry and what can be done to fill it. The study found the greatest current workforce gap among U.S. commercial bakeries is filling hourly maintenance and engineering positions. >> Read full article

Taste Tomorrow: consumer insights on bakery

This past May in Toronto the Belgian-based bakery industry supplier Puratos shared the results of its latest Taste Tomorrow global research study. Conducted every three years, the most recent Taste Tomorrow survey gathered information from nearly 11,000 consumers in 25 countries, and focused on the public’s perceptions and behaviours related to baked goods and chocolate. The four primary observations taken from the results were: consumers expect to see more diversity in foods in the future; people are concerned about the quality and healthiness of foods in the years to come; consumers are challenged when it comes to understanding what is healthy; and there is a level of concern with respect to sustainability when it comes to food production and consumption.
